Tile Photo Coasters

I joined Pinterest last spring. It is wonderful! And it's what made my list of DIY ideas grow. Infinitesimally! I also had all these ideas that I had no idea how to make happen. I've found so many tutorials that are making my ideas real! It's awesome! (I have also tried a bunch of recipes, but I'll catch up posting on them another time.)

So the first thing I made (well, technically the second- I made a bunch of beaded wrap bracelets but accidentally deleted all my photos) were these tile photo coasters.

I didn't think ahead and take pics of my process, so that's the only one I have. Oh well, lesson learned. I take pictures at each step now.

I read two different tutorials which were basically the same and went to work. (If you want to look at those two here they are- number 1 and number 2.)

The materials you need are:
  • 4"x4" tiles; both the tutorials used a tumbled marble, I liked the rough edges but didn't want as many holes on the top so I went with a porcelain tile. I think I paid $0.44 per tile at Lowes.
  • white tissue paper; don't worry about folds, trust me they'll lay flat when you modpodge them onto the tile.
  • cardstock
  • gloss or matte modpodge
  • foam brush
  • acrylic clear coat
  • felt or cork for the bottom; I used felt and I think I might eventually change it to cork. The felt isn't as thick and there is still some scraping on the table sometimes.
Steps:

First you need to decide on your photos. I chose some from our many travels to Japan. I plan on making some for family and I'm going to use old black and white photos. They need to be cropped to fit your tiles (4"x4").

Cut a piece of tissue paper an inch or two larger than the sheet of cardstock. Lay it on top and wrap the overhang onto the back and tape it. Then you print your pictures by running the tissue/cardstock through your printer! It makes it so the printer doesn't tear the tissue to bits. Brilliant right? Some people are so smart!

After your pics are printed, cut them down to the right size. I laid mine on top of the tiles to make sure they were going to work. My tile corners are rounded so I ended up trimming them to fit that.

Brush a layer of modpodge onto the tile and carefully lay your picture on while wet. Make sure to kinda push it around and situate it before you paint a healthy layer of modpodge on top. I liked the edges torn so I used my brush and fingernail to delicately tear them just a teeny bit. Or if you prefer, you can tear the edges slightly when cutting them out. If your picture gets a large tear or something, immediately wash it off in the sink. That way you can re-use the tile when you try again.

After the modpodge fully dries, take them outside, lay them on some cardboard and spray a layer of acrylic on them. I did two layers. I don't know if two was overkill, but I felt "better safe than sorry".

Once the acrylic dries, glue your cork or felt on back and you're done!

They were so easy to do and I love them! Dave is going to make me a wooden case for them sometime, but for now they just stack neatly on the coffee table. And one of the great things about them is if we ever break one, they're easy to replace! Or if we ever need more than 6, it's also easy to add to the set.

Finally Fenced In

So, we finally got our fence put up this summer. And I'm finally showing it off. Dave has been pushing me to get these pics on here. He's very proud of it. And he should be! It's a wonderful, beautiful, awesome thing!

To even the ground a bit and because we didn't want to bring dirt in by wheelbarrow after the fence was in, we had 4 truckloads of dirt brought in. Three fill and one topsoil. It was a lot of dirt!
We also rented a CAT for the day to move it all faster. Best investment ever! This totally saved our backs and was fun to play with too! Our friend Ned, came over and helped out for half a day too.
This dirt was so much better than the rocky soil we had. This stuff will actually grow grass! (Ignore the white spots on the wall. We still have to scrub those with acid...)
So much better right?! And since this pic has been taken, we got the stairs treads half done. Someday, it'll all be done. Someday.
And this is the fence! Dave designed the whole thing. I was his helper. I think we did a pretty good job. This is after staining too. I'm so glad we got that done cause it's really wet outside right now and it still looks great. No graying (I really, really dislike gray wood fences).
These copper caps were my idea. Dave wanted plain wood ones, but these are way better! I love them so much. I think they add a whole new level of awesome-ness to it! Ha!
And look at the weeds that sprung up! We left for 3 weeks and came home to this. Some were as tall as my waist! We didn't get the grass planted this year, but we're still really happy with it. So is Seeley. Now she can go outside anytime and I don't have to watch her like a hawk to make sure she stays or doesn't scare anyone. She's very territorial. This fence makes us all very happy!

Swift Summer Catch-up!

This summer went by fast! Once it got here. We got back from Japan in March and it rained until June. But once summer came in July, it was great. We built our fence (I'll post more on that later), Dave went to Japan for 2 weeks, we went to Idaho and Utah together for 2 weeks, me alone for 2 weeks, Rylee came and stayed with us for 6 weeks, Dave went to San Diego for a week, I went to Newport, Oregon for a couple days with my parents and brother's family, we worked on the never-ending retaining wall in the backyard, did lots of yardwork, more yardwork, and even more yardwork. Oh yeah, and yardwork.
So here are some pics of our summer. Mostly from my point of view. Dave never uses his camera.
 Jax and Captain

Jax helping pull in the crab pots.
I think he's getting pinched. And being tough about it.
Elena. I wanna steal this girl for my own!

Eva. We were laying on the floor playing with my phone together.

No, we aren't drunk. It was the flash.
Modeling with fire. Hot and dangerous. :)
 Glass beach.

I hate my fat face but we were having SO MUCH fun that day!

Sassy Hollow. One day, we'll own a cabin here. I'm determined!
 La Push Beach

She wanted her pic with this so much, we had to come back when I missed it the first time.
She got ahold of my camera while we were driving.

 West Yellowstone, Montana
She climbed this tree and almost couldn't get down.
Bad luck shorts. I'm not allowed to tell what happened a few minutes later.
 Rafe.
It was love at first sight.

 Port Angeles, WA
Forks, WA. This town is too "crazy fan girl". We left a few minutes later cause we felt too creepy.

We dip-dyed her hair a week before she left. Contrary to her expressions, she actually did love it. I did too. It was so cute!

 I love this. She's adorable!
 And furry!
Our last few moments together waiting at the airport for her flight. :(
This is probably my favorite pic of the whole summer. We had so much fun together! Gosh I miss my family and wish I got to be with them more!
